InSpace Biodegradable subacromial spacer

AVORS Medical Group is big on keeping our fingers on the pulse of new technologies with potential to reduce surgery, provide better patient outcomes, and improve our patients quality of life.  Dr. Justin Sherfey, DO performs Total Shoulder Replacements at AVORS Medical Group and works extensively on rotator cuff tears on all ages and degrees of tears.  Dr. Sherfey is Antelope Valley's 1st provider to introduce a new treatment that can delay painful and costly rotator cuff surgery for massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears

The first procedure was performed at Palmdale Regional Medical Center and was quick, efficient, and with minimal recover time.

The InSpace balloon implant is a breakthrough solution for arthroscopic treatment of massive irreparable rotator cuff tears that is efficient and provides sustained patient improvements.  Imagine having a simple procedure and removing painful rotator cuff surgery recovery.  This new technology offers hope to avoid painful surgery and yet still provide relief.

What is the InSpace Biodegradable subacromial spacer?

The InSpace biodegradable implantable balloon (spacer) is used as a spacer to reduce friction between the acromion and the humeral head or rotator cuff to allow smooth gliding of the humeral head against the acromion. InSpace is designed to restore shoulder function and reduce pain.  Indicated for treating irreparable full-thickness torn rotator cuff tendons caused by trauma, the balloon implant can restore the subacromial space without sutures or fixation devices.  The balloon may be inserted arthroscopically or by using mini-open procedure.  The device was also shown to enhance shoulder motion and function.

What is a Rotator Cuff Tear?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the head of the upper arm bone firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder. A rotator cuff injury can cause a dull ache in the shoulder that worsens at night. Rotator cuff injuries are common and increase with age.

How can the InSpace Biodegradable subacromial spacer help me?

Current strategies treating massive irreparable rotator cuff tears often present a challenge to surgeons and may require long and frustrating rehabilitation processes for patients.  Literature on the Inspace Ballon demonstrates a shorter, less invasive option that may enable sustained, clinically meaningful improvements in shoulder function and symptoms.  Imagine instead of a painful and Physical Therapy intensive recovery, you have a low impact, low risk procedure instead.

The spacer is positioned by an arthroscopic procedure in the subacromial space between the humerus head and the acromion. Once positioned, the spacer is inflated with physiological water to allow smooth and frictionless gliding between the shoulder bones (see the diagram below showing the position of the implanted balloon in relation to the bones and muscles).

See two videos below on the procedure and speed of the entire surgical process.
